Coral Reef Senior High School was founded in August 1997 and has an enrollment of approximately 3,000 students. Led by Principal Thomas Ennis, the school is known locally as “Miami’s Mega Magnet School” as it offers six different magnet programs. Coral Reef is lauded for its academic excellence and consistently ranks as one of the top public high schools in Florida; in 2008, the school was ranked 19th in the nation by Newsweek. The school accepts applications from eighth grade students all over the county for admission to one of its ninth grade programs.
Coral Reef’s German International Baccalaureate (IB) program is a rigorous course of study linking humanities, the sciences, mathematics, languages and community service while furthering students’ fluency in the German language. The IB curriculum incorporates standards that assume a high level of aptitude and achievement. IB students also take Advanced Placement (AP) classes in History, Science and English during their four years and therefore may earn additional college credits. The full IB Diploma requires advanced international examinations in the core subject areas plus: a required Theory of Knowledge course and paper; a 4,000 word research paper titled the Extended Essay; and 150 hours of community service and extracurricular activities called Creativity, Action, and Service (CAS).
Currently, there are 92 students enrolled in Coral Reef’s German program. They are split into six different periods based on their level of language proficiency. The more advanced ninth and tenth grade students take a language and literature class plus an elective Humanities class taught in German.
Approximately 95% of Coral Reef IB students successfully pass the IB requirements. Many of those students go on to attend competitive colleges and universities, including those of the Ivy League.
Coral Reef’s German teachers sponsor the German Honor Society. The German Honor Society’s student members focus on activities that showcase and promote the German culture both at school and in the broader community. Additionally, they participate at GIPA’s annual Oktoberfest celebration as well as at other local events like the German Christmas Market.
IMPORTANT NOTE: German IS students enrolled at GW Carver Middle School have direct matriculation into the German IB program at Coral Reef High School. However, to ensure they meet the minimum requirements, Miami-Dade County requires all incoming ninth grade students to submit an application to Coral Reef through the regular Magnet Schools application process.
